Artist Uncovered

The LA Times has the story.

The artist, Firas Alkhateeb, says "'In terms of domestic policy, I don't think he's really doing much good for the country right now,' he said. 'We don't have to 'hero worship' the guy.'"

But he also says, "'I abstained from voting in November,' he wrote in an e-mail. 'Living in Illinois, my vote means close to nothing as there was no chance Obama would not win the state.' If he had to choose a politician to support, Alkhateeb said, it would be Ohio Democratic Rep. Dennis Kucinich."

It is an interesting look at this young guy but try to figure him. Obama is not doing any good he would rather have Kucinich. Sphere: Related Content

The Barack Obama Joker Poster And The Purpose Of The Artist

I don't particularly enjoy the image. It is not original and it is hyperbolic. An example of how we turn disagreement into charges of evil and fascism without any understanding of the charges being made. These charges and name calling are mostly unnecessary and wrong during the Bush administration as they are now.

Here is a defense, by Patrick Courrielche, that I don't entirely agree with but I can not argue with proposition that art will enter politics and the artist should maintain the right to present ideas and images that cross boundaries and cause vigorous discussion, but that discussion should remain civil. Is The Crisis At NYC Art Istitutions A Learning Experience

City Journal describes the trouble New York City's cultural venues are experiencing and struggles they will face over the next two years. Some institutions became too reliant on endowment investment income and have seen losses around 35%. Coupled with that contributions are down while art supporters feel the economy tightening their own belts and the city contribution to institutions is predictably down. Lay-offs, reduced hours, reduced service and canceled exhibits are being seen all over the city. Unfortunately some smaller institutions close amid this economic terror for the arts.

Sad times for the city. What is the impact on the tourist cache? Will institutions learn to be more conservative with endowment investments? Sphere: Related Content

Will Losing Expertise Cost Us An Art And A Leg?

Robert Lee Hotz laments the loss of technical skills from generation to generation. Hotz uses the art and science of art restoration to explain the distressing situation we face as one generation of skilled people retire without passing on those skills to younger people.

Sorry about the stupid pun in the title. Sphere: Related Content
